Advisory that Creates a Connection.

Deep River Middle School is proud to offer our students a highly focused, democratically based advisory session. We feel that advisory is exceptionally important in a young adolescent’s life. This period is set aside for students to bond with their peers and their teachers, as well as learn and discuss critical life skills.

DRMS kicks off the year with a two day, overnight trip to Camp Deep River, a team-building retreat to help foster student and student-teacher bonds. Once at camp, students will be placed into their respective advisory groups, and will vote on a group name. Each of these groups is cross-grade age, which means students of all ages will be interacting during this time. Groups are no more than fifteen students and one teacher per group. Parents are encouraged to attend the overnight weekend in order to bond with students and other parents in our effort to create our Community Minded school.

Once back at school, these groups meet in the advising teacher’s classroom every B Day. Advisory topics can include many things from study skills, to bullying, to a friendly game of kickball in the schoolyard. Bi-weekly field trips are scheduled for student enrichment to places like the supermarket, to learn about making healthy eating choices.

It is our hope that these advisory sessions help create our goal of a Community Minded school. We feel these periods offer students opportunities to build relationships with peers and teachers that they may not have in a traditional school setting.
