A CURRICULUM THAT GUIDES LEARNING

Develop who you are...

Develop who you want to be...

Grow everyday.

The curriculum at DRMS works to enforce the North Carolina Common Core State Standards through student based team collaboration and differentiation to ensure that all students have equal opportunity to succeed. The curriculum will not only be delivered through core classes but instead students will have the opportunity to master information, 21st Century Skills, and develop as individuals through a diverse range of courses that are of the most interest to them.  It is crucial to our mission that all information presented to the student is followed with practical application to enforce connections to real world application and enforce relevance of material.

Students will discuss topics such as the environment, human rights, gender, war, conflict & violence, globalization, and corruption and abuse of power along with topics suggested by students and parents throughout the year.

All of our subjects feature themes for the quarter. For example, one theme may be the classical book Moby Dick. Language Arts will be reading this book and discussing its literary strengths. Science will be discussing ocean creatures, as well as physical science subjects such as wind force.

Social Studies will be discussing the timeframe of the book’s subject, and focusing on the greater world at the time such as politics and religion. Math will be featuring questions that pertain to sea-faring and the ocean such as the geometry of sails and volume.

As our school is democratically based, these themes are voted on by the student body for the year. Suggestions for themes are taken from students at the end of the preceding year, and each grade level will have a different theme each quarter.

This ensures that our school creates an environment of cooperation and creativity. Teacher creativity in this project is constantly being tested, in our efforts to bring the students the most interesting and engaging material.
